"It is better, so the Fourth Amendment teaches us, that the guilty sometimes go free than the citizens be subject to easy arrest."

-  Justice William O. Douglas

"Be not intimidated... nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberties by any pretense of politeness, delicacy, or decency. These, as they are often used, are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery and cowardice."

- President John Adams

"The history of totalitarian regimes is reflected in the evolution and perfection of the instruments of terror and more especially the police."

- Professor Carl J. Friedrich

"Degeneracy follows every autocratic system of violence, for violence inevitably attracts moral inferiors."

- Albert Einstein

"The convoluted wording of legalisms grew up around the necessity to hide from ourselves the violence we intend toward each other. Between depriving a man of one hour from his life and depriving him of his life there exists only a difference of degree. You have done violence to him, consumed his energy."

- Frank Herbert

"There's no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws."

- Ayn Rand

"The test for whether one is living in a police state is that those who are charged with enforcing the law are allowed to break the laws with impunity."

- Jon Roland

"Nearly every day on the television set the hero cop breaks into the bad guy’s house and beats a confession out of him and we cheer on the cop. Propaganda smears our clear vision. It causes us to accept the diminishment of our constitutional protections as something to be lauded – after all, the cop was protecting us."

- Gary Spence

Police officers are often portrayed on the same level as priests and school teachers.  They are authority figures who are supposed to be beyond reproach.  When police officers violate our trust why then do they appeal to us as though they are just normal citizens who make "mistakes" from time to time?  And more importantly why do we let them get away with it?  Imagine if the priest or school teacher made mistakes from time to time with your child...

What tax paid organization is charged with defending the citizens of the United States against the forces of tyranny?  What group of people are charged with defending the nation?  Let's hope the people paid to do that job don't run from or shirk their responsibilities for the luxry of comfort or convenience.  Slavery and servitude are convenient but hopefully we employ the courageous and principled to protect our nation.  If we do not, we are doomed.

I wonder what the wives and children of "good citizens" who drive nice cars and have nice jobs and college degrees would think if they knew how their husband and father took pains to avoid being a man.  If they knew that deep down he was unwilling to risk even the slightest to fight for America...  Would they be frightened for their safety?  They should be.

Woman Brutalized Under Police Custody

Our page here is NOT a good resource for Police Abuse cases.  We don't have the time to report on the staggering number of cases of police misconduct.  Thankfully the CATO Institute does, and you can get an email sent to you daily tracking the day's reports of police misconduct complete with media sources and videos.  You may be shocked by how many stories pop up each and every day.  Please visit the CATO Insititute's National Police Misconduct Reporting Project and subscribe to their daily newsletter.  It will open your eyes if they're not already.  We also share the CATO Institute's daily report in our police misconduct forum.

In this horrific video we see a woman brutalized while under the custody of the police.  This video shows the importance of legal reform which leverages inexpensive digital audio and visual technology to provide the transparency required in a free society.

Pastor Tased and Beaten by Border Patrol

Here an American pastor, father of five, has his car windows broken, his body tazed and beaten (requiring 11 stitches) and his time occupied because members of the Border Patrol and the Department of Public Safety lied about "reasonable suspicion" provided by their canine to punish him because he invoked his fourth amendment rights against a warrantless and unreasonable search.  His wife keeps an excellent blog here: http://stevenandersonfamily.blogspot.com/search/label/border%20patrol%20abuse

The Shooting of SRA Elio Carrion

This video shows a California police officer shooting an Air Force combat veteran security forces airman while the airman attempts to comply with the police officer's instructions.  You can hear the airman mention that he is on the cop's side, is unarmed, means the cop no harm, and is in the military.  When told to get up by the cop the airman attempts to obey and gets shot multiple times.  The police officer curses at the airman while he screams in pain.  The police officer reportedly lied about the shooting to superiors before he realized he had been video taped.  Miraculously the airman survived the brutal shooting.  The police officer was acquitted in court where a jury found him not guilty of attempted manslaughter.  While a far cry from justice, the police officer was fired from the department and the county paid 1.5 million to then Senior Airman Elio Carrion.

Retired Air Force Officer and Combat Veteran Beaten

An Air Force pilot and retired field grade officer gets beaten in his own Texan home (where your home is your castle).  More information on this excessive force can be found in this local story.

Cop Pummels Female Bartender

In this breathtaking video we see a two-hundred and fifty pound cop brutalize a one-hundred and twenty-five pound female bartender because she won't serve him more drinks.  As this news story shows, the police officer spent no time in jail.  As this more complete video shows, the entire police department worked to prevent media from reporting on the incident.  It also shows how many people watched the man beat the woman begging the question, "is there an American left in our country or is it populated only by cowards?"  It's not hard to understand how such lack of accountability fuels police abuse as officers really are treated above the law.  Or perhaps it was his defense attorney's credible explanation of how this police officer felt threatened by the tiny little bartender.

Cop Tasers Man in Front of Pregnant Wife

In this video a police officer pulls over a citizen and his pregant wife for allegedly speeding.  The citizen doesn't think he was speeding, refuses to sign the citation as a result, and then gets tasered for it while clearly not presenting a threat to the police officer.  While failing to sign a citation may justify arrest according to the prerogative of the cop, it is impossible to justify the use of the taser.  The police officer is clearly not threatened though this excuse is often used to justify such behavior. Police who are so easily scared by women, skateboarders, and mini-driving citizens such that they deploy force at a whim do not display the professionalism required for law enforcement.  Police work is not an occupation for the easily frightened.

Cop Harasses and Assaults a Child

While many officers attribute a feeling of being threatened as central to their violations, this video portrays the real heart of common police abuse - insecurity.  In this video a police officer (also caught in a different video) seeks to dominate children found skateboarding while lecturing them on his worldview.  Here we see no threat to the officer.  No stressful surrounding or need for a snap decision.  It is simply raw insecurity purchased by the tax payer and illustrates that bruises and blood are not required to constitute police abuse.  All that is required is a blend of insecurity and a healthy disrespect for American principles.  Police abuse is both cowardly and un-American.

Cop Assaults Bicyclist

Here a New York Police officer assaults a bike rider during a bicycle marathon.  The bicylist shown is violentlly attacked and then was charged by officer Pat Pogan with "blocking traffic, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and assault" according to News.cnet.com.  This was apparently before this video showed up online.  Oops.  Thankfully the police officer was fired.  This just shows again how important audio/video technology is.  Without such transparency, cops like this get away with violence and lies and ordinary innocent citizens pay for it.  Literally.

The Number of Reported Abuses is Staggering

But we know the number of unreported abuse incidents is much higher.  We at VAPA are dedicated to changing that and bringing police abuse into the light where it can be dealt with.  Right now the majority of abuse goes unreported by average citizens who don't have the time, the resources, or the desire to risk their lives or those of their families to fight what are increasingly seen as common occurrences and the "cost of doing business" in a society that has forsaken its American birthright.  The more we view Cops episodes and see videos of police abuse on YouTube the more desensitized we become.  Just as many expect the average politician to lie and accept it as reality so also does a citizen expect their tax paid police to act as thugs from time to time.  Some sidestep this reality by ensuring they are anything but American in their behavior when dealing with the police.  We are taught to be submissive, extra polite and to not question the government agent who always has our best interest in mind.  When we do not act as an American citizen when dealing with law enforcement then we give up our American birthright and we tarnish the very real sacrifices of the fallen.
